Disaster Relief - Philippines

SUPER TYPHOON HAIYAN
Your prayers and financial support are needed

This typhoon left monumental devastation when it struck the central Philippines on November 8, 2013.  The storm has been identified as one of the worst recorded typhoons in history.  Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced.

We ask that you lift up the people of this country in your prayers.  If you are wanting to give financial support, through Presbyterian Disaster Asssistance, please follow this link.  https://www.presbyterianmission.org/donate/make-a-gift/DR000012/

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is helping Typhoon Haiyan survivors by working in collaboration withour mission partner the National Council of Churches in the Philippines and as a member of ACT Alliance.

PDA-supported efforts are providing immediate assistance to more than 200,000.  Assistance includes emergency goods, shelter materials, water/sanitation and more.

Call to Prayer for the Philippines

NOVEMBER 11, 2013
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) deeply grieves the devastation and loss in the Republic of the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda). The denomination is actively responding throughPresbyterian Disaster Assistance and its partners, and also is calling for prayer.
Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
     your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
     your judgments are like the great deep;
     you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.
How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
     All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house,
     and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
     in your light we see light. (Ps. 36:5–9 [NRSV])
God our Lord
Diyos ang aming Panginoon
(Tagalog-Filipino)
Thiên Chúa, Chúa chúng ta (Vietnamese)
Shàngdì wǒmen de zhǔ (Mandarin)
The Creator of the world, the stiller of storms, our shelter and our strength:
We turn to You in this dire hour, of massive devastation and death.
Interceding for your people in the Philippines and in other parts of Southeast Asia,
Joining our hearts, our prayers, and our cries with theirs.
Hear us, dear God! We plead to You. See the suffering. Feel the tears. Come to Your
     people in a way that only You can, God of mercy and grace.
Be the shelter for the thousands whose homes have now become debris or washed with
     the waters;
Be the healer for the wounded;
Be the comforter for many who weep, for the many who sift through the trees, who
     wonder, “Where is my loved one? Why us?”
Feel the pain, dear Lord, because You know our inward parts, the heart and soul of Your
     people beat with anguish that You alone can bear, that You alone can hold in the
     shadow of your wings.
Save
  • the farmers whose crops are now destroyed;
  • the fishermen whose boats have become parts of the seas;
  • the villagers whose homes are no more;
  • those who await to be rescued.
Lord our God, be the Savior of us all.
God, the fountain of life and the light of light,
Fill Your people with hope in these times of despair.
Be the light in what will be a long journey in darkness.
Strengthen
  • rescue and relief workers, with determination and courage;
  • doctors and nurses, who tend to the injured, who grow tired and wearied with overwhelming numbers and scarce resources.
Lord our God, be the Strength when Your people are weakened and worn.
Supply
  • food to the hundreds of thousands who are hungry;
  • water to the thirsty;
  • medicine to those who need healing;
  • hope to the hopeless.
Lord our God, be the Provider of Your people’s needs according to Your riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Phil. 4:19)
Summon the prayers, mobilize compassion, prompt the action of all of your people here and around the world, with what You provide.
Lord, in Your mercies, hear our prayers.
Lord Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord Spirit, grant us Your peace.
Amen.

Our Lenten Program and The Bible on History Channel

Please join us for our Wonderful Wednesday Lenten Program (March 6, 13, 20) The study is What Wondrous Love:  Holy Week in Word and Art.

We also want to share an upcoming mini-series, The Bible.

"The Bible" is an epic five-week, 10-hour television mini-series premiering March 3rd on the History Channel from Emmy-Award winning husband and wife team, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.  For two hours each Sunday night, millions of viewers will see the Bible come to life in a way never before seen.  The final episode of the series will air on Easter Sunday (March 31) and will feature the death and resurrection of Jesus.  To help ensure the accuracy of the mini-series, many Christian scholars served as advisors and hundreds of Christian leaders have given their endorsement.
"In terms of importance, nothing we've ever done, not Touched By An Angel, not Survivor, not The Voice, not The Apprentice, none of this could possibly compare to "The Bible" Burnett says.  This is not a TV show to us.  Its images, sound and sacred text that people will still watch, way after our grandchildren are old people."  Famed television producer Mark Burnett tackles his projects with passion, but The Bible is a special labor of love.  The 10-hour, five-part docudrama will span the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, presenting some of its best known stories, including Noah's Ark, the Exodus, Daniel in the lions' den and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.  Former Touched By An Angel star Roma Downey, Burnett's wife and fellow executive producer, heads a large international cast in the role of Mother Mary.  Keith David, an Emmy winner for voice-over performances, will narrate with a musical score by Oscar and Grammy winning composer Hans Zimmer.
Since the entire Bible can't be covered in 10 hours, the miniseries, which was filmed in Morocco, focuses on a select group of stories and features such compelling figures as Abraham, Moses and David.  Some stories had to be compressed for artistic purposes.
This mini-series does not begin until March 3rd but this will give all of us a chance to tell as many people as possible about this series.

Be Still and Know That I Am God - A Lenten Spiritual Retreat

Interested?  Respond to Pastor Bob at      bnlabel@dnet.net    ASAP

Dear Hayesville Presbyterian Church Family and Friends,

    I recently received information about a retreat at Montreat Conference Center I think some in the church family might be interested in attending. I should have said something this morning, but forgot. So, I'd like to let everyone know about it through email, and I will bring the registration blanks next Sunday for those who are interested in attending to pick up, fill out and send in.

The conference is going to take place Friday - Saturday, February 22-23 at Montreat. Montreat is our
PCUSA denomination's conference center near Black Mountain, NC (about 12 or so miles east of Asheville). Presbyterians come from all over the country to attend conferences there. It really is a beautiful place, especially for those who don't live in the mountains. The title of the conference is "Be still and know that I am God: A Lenten Spiritual Retreat". It will be lead by Dr. Tom Lewis, who recently retired as director of the Columbia Seminary (Atlanta)  Spirituality Program. A really neat thing is that the cost of $40 includes Friday dinner, a night's lodging in Assembly Inn (double occupancy),  Saturday breakfast and lunch, the program, and materials. Obviously it is being subsidized by the presbytery. The deadline for signing up at the $40 rate is Feb. 8. It will be more after that.

So, if someone has wanted to experience Montreat and would enjoy a spiritual retreat to enhance and enrich your observance of Lent, this would be the time to do it. Bob is planning to attend. (Linda will be at the Monastary of the Holy Spirit that weekend).  We can arrange to car pool to get us there, so don't worry about driving.

I'd kinda like to know how many registration blanks to bring with me Sunday. If you know you would like to attend, how about emailing me to let me know.  And how about letting our friends know who don't get emails.

Thanks. Bob
